The purpose of the research was to know the most significant personal and functional determinants of the professional deformation in the penitentiary staff. The importance of legal and moral awareness for the performance of operational and service activities, correction and resocialization of convicts is substantiated. It has been proved that a professionally deformed employee knows the legal and moral norms, but complies with them subjectively and arbitrarily and justifies his actions with various circumstances related to the specifics of the psychology and behavior of convicts. The methodological basis of the research is presented as comparative-legal and systematic analysis, formal-legal method, method of interpretation, hermeneutic method, as well as methods of analysis and synthesis. The conclusions identify socio-psychological measures aimed at the prevention of professional deformation of prison staff, among which are: improvement of the system of training, education and professional development; formation and maintenance of a sense of security, confidence in the usefulness and fairness of work. In addition, careful selection of personnel should be carried out taking into account the business qualities and especially the moral qualities of employees, etc.

This study reports on a series of qualitative interviews with professionals in Shanghai, China who work with children. The interviews explored the awareness of child protection issues amongst a range of people who work with children, how they differentiate corporal punishment from maltreatment and what they would do in response to cases of child abuse. Shanghai has one of the most well developed child welfare systems in China, and compared to similar professionals in other cities, those in Shanghai had higher awareness and more training, but were nevertheless reluctant to intervene and did not feel well prepared to deal with cases of child abuse should they be encountered. However there are some indications that practice is improving, and examples of recent developments are provided.
The content of the concept of "deformation of legal awareness" has been revealed. The basic modern scientific approaches to the classification of the forms of deformation of legal awareness have been considered. The peculiarities of legal nihilism and legal idealism as the main forms of deformation of legal awareness have been studied. The basic directions of overcoming deformation of legal awareness in the transition society have been established. It has been determined that legal nihilism is a general historical phenomenon: such a form of deformation of legal awareness is present in any society; however, reflecting the mentality of any nation and at the same time constituting its integral part, legal nihilism has unique, specific manifestations in the legal awareness in each nation. Accordingly, the author has suggested to consider this form of deformation of legal awareness as something peculiar to a specific nation in its ethnic and social, political and legal sense, evolving depending on the specific historical, socio-economic, geographical, cultural, linguistic and other factors. It has been noted that nowadays the main source of deformation of legal awareness is the critical state of Ukrainian society. Thus, social tension, economic problems, difficult moral and psychological state of the population and many other factors do not contribute to overcome legal nihilism, but also constantly reproduce and increase it. The author states the following main directions of overcoming the state of deformation of legal awareness: the raise of political and legal culture of citizens, their legal and moral awareness; improvement of the current legislation; prevention of offenses; strengthening law and order; guaranteeing respect and full protection of individual rights; improvement of the quality of legal education of the population; training of highly qualified staff of lawyers; the early completion of legal reform, etc.

The paper describes the development of the 1998 revision of the Psychological Society of Ireland's Code of Professional Ethics. The Code incorporates the European Meta-Code of Ethics and an ethical decision-making procedure borrowed from the Canadian Psychological Association. An example using the procedure is presented. To aid decision making, a classification of different kinds of stakeholder (i.e., interested party) affected by ethical decisions is offered. The author contends (1) that psychologists should assert the right, which is an important aspect of professional autonomy, to make discretionary judgments, (2) that to be justified in doing so they need to educate themselves in sound and deliberative judgment, and (3) that the process is facilitated by a code such as the Irish one, which emphasizes ethical awareness and decision making. The need for awareness and judgment is underlined by the variability in the ethical codes of different organizations and different European states: in such a context, codes should be used as broad yardsticks, rather than precise templates.
